A Plea

Jack's room fills with the light of morning and all shadows are cast back into their temporary pits.
Warren, no longer slumping or drowsy, takes a deep breath and exhales, through his nostrils, with a determination he hasn't felt in many weeks. Pushing himself up with one fluid thrust of strength, he stands over Jack. Look at me Jack...and you better make sure you meet my gaze. Startled at the tone and forcefulness in Warren's voice, Jack raises his head and looking straight at Warren, waits for the boots to drop.
Remembering the countless witness and suspect interviews he has conducted, Warren puts his hands on his hips and starts in...I seem to be lacking some information and if you could enlighten me, then I can better ascertain possible options for proceeding. One thing is very clear to me and that is your confidence has abandoned you for some reason; I don't particularly grasp this, since the first night we met, you seemed to posses an ability to keep going, no matter the danger or circumstances. I was amazed by your singular and apparent lack of concern for your own safety and the sheer determination to protect others, even though some unknown to you. Are you going to sit there and tell me you've completely given up, that all the fight raging in your soul has been extinguished? How could you even consider giving up or in to such a devil of a man as The Ripper, who clearly is your nemesis and he himself will not rest until all his evil desires and fiendish plans have been fully sated? When I saw you standing in the courtyard and the ghost-like women vanished, you looked at me, without a trace of fear and such profound determination across your face, touched with empathy I could not fathom ...my soul was riveted where I stood. It seemed as though you could change the course of history. Am I wrong in thinking that that is why you're here? We can't save those who have already perished under the Rippers knife, but we can take the blade out of his hand and put it in ours...
Taking his right hand off his hip, Warren stretches it out, towards Jack and holds it there. Well, what do you say...are we partners in this quest?
Jack stands up, still looking at Warren and extending his own right hand, grasps the policeman's in a a shake that will forever bind them together. A smile creeps across Warren's face and Jack utters words he thought long forgotten and unusable...thank you, my friend.
